During UK Wind Energy Week, Sir James Duddridge KCMG, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, visited the Rampion Offshore Windfarm with the Industry in Parliament Trust to learn more about offshore wind's role in our net zero transition.
Rampion Windfarm can generate 400 megawatts of electricity, roughly enough to power 350,000 homes, and is looking to expand the windfarm with another 90 turbines to bring generating capacity up to 1200 megawatts.
By 2030, the wind energy sector is expected to support over 100,000 jobs across the country and help drive nearly £17 Billion of investment each year.
In January, Sir James raised the importance and substantial benefits of the United Kingdom’s offshore wind sector with George Freeman MP, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation.
Commenting Sir James said,
“I was impressed by what I saw at the Rampion Windfarm. It underlines the need to harness renewable energy, such as offshore wind, as it plays a critical role in moving away from traditional fossil fuels.
“We need to ensure we seize the benefits of renewable energy, as not only a means to drive down energy bills, but as an engine of economic growth that provides high wage, high skilled jobs.”
