James Duddridge MP has written to the Chief Executive of Marks and Spencer to seek reassurances over the future of M&S in Southend High Street.
The Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East stressed that the retailer was an important local employer and played a key role in the High Street.
Last week it was announced that 30 Marks and Spencer stores will close over the next 10 years.
James said:
"If Southend's Marks and Spencer were to close it would be another big loss to our High Street.
"I have therefore written to the Chief Executive of M&S to seek reassurances that our store is not earmarked for closure.
"I will, of course, keep residents updated in due course."
