Plans to strengthen police powers to tackle unauthorised traveller encampments have been welcomed by James Duddridge MP.
On Monday, the Government published its response to the "strengthening police powers to tackle unauthorised encampments" consultation.
The response includes plans to introduce a new criminal offence of intentional trespass and extend existing powers for police to tackle unauthorised encampments, by way of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
James, a long-time campaigner for tougher action against unauthorised encampments, welcomed the announcement.
The Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East said:
"I, along with a number of other Essex MPs, have been calling for the police to be given more powers to tackle unauthorised encampments for many years, and this announcement is very welcome.
"The anti-social behaviour, littering and noise often associated with unauthorised encampments cause misery for residents living nearby, and the taxpayer is often hit with a large clean-up bill too.
"I know the Government understands these concerns, and I am sure that many residents who have contacted me over the years about this issue will be relieved that action is being taken to give police new powers so unauthorised encampments can be removed quickly and effectively."
