On Wednesday (9th July 2020), the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak unveiled new measures to support the economy as part of its ongoing response to the Covid-19 pandemic, including a 15% VAT cut for hospitality and tourism, as well as a new "Eat Out to Help Out" scheme.
The announcements were welcomed by James Duddridge MP, who said:
“The tourism and hospitality sector is so important for seaside towns such as Southend, and we shouldn’t underestimate how tough it has been for these firms in particular over the last few months. As we now get back to a degree of normality, it is right we turn our attention to creating and protecting jobs, and I very much welcome the Chancellor’s announcement which will make a big difference to our local businesses as they begin to re-open their doors. Unique incentives such as the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, along with the 15% reduction in VAT, are a much-needed boost that will benefit both customers and businesses, while helping our town and country to get back on track.”
