James Duddridge MP met with Cancer Research UK to discuss the charity’s campaign to improve diagnosis rates in the UK.
Figures from Cancer Research UK suggest that in one year, around 115,000 cancer patients are diagnosed too late to give them the best chance of survival.
It means that nearly half of all cancer diagnoses with a known stage in England are detected at stage 3 or 4 – leaving them with fewer treatment options and less chance of surviving their disease, the charity says.
Last month the Government announced £115 million in additional funding to invest in new research to improve treatment, diagnosis and care options for devastating diseases including cancer.
This runs alongside the extra £33.9 billion the Government has committed to the NHS.
Meeting the Cancer Research UK team at Conservative Party Conference, James, MP for Rochford and Southend East, said:
“Spotting cancer at an early stage greatly increases the chances of successful treatment.
"This Government is fully committed to investing in our NHS and improving diagnosis rates and I was glad to be able to chat with Cancer Research UK to discuss their campaign and ways in which this can be achieved.”
