Thirsty commuters could have access to free water fountains to refill their bottles under a bid by James Duddridge MP to c2c's improvement fund.
The MP for Rochford and Southend East has officially submitted his suggestion to the rail operator, who is looking for ideas that would help benefit passengers and potential passengers as part of its Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF).
James, a regular user of the line, believes installing such water fountains would not only help save passengers money but also benefit the environment by cutting single use plastic too.
These measures have already proven a success at railway stations around the country, including at London Euston.
Network Rail says passengers travelling between the London terminal, the Midlands and North West helped save more than half a million plastic water bottles in the last year by using free station water fountains.
Now, James hopes to see a similar success story here in Southend. The MP said:
"More and more people are using reusable bottles, which is not only great for saving money, but also a real benefit to our environment too.
"By introducing these water fountains we can make it easier for passengers to fill up on the go, cutting plastic waste even further.
"I am delighted to have submitted my nomination to c2c's fund - and hope my suggestion will be taken forward so we can show Southend is serious about protecting our environment."
c2c Managing Director Julian Drury said:
"We welcome this nomination from James and will assess it as part of c2c's Customer and Community Fund.
"There is £375,000 available through c2c's fund over the next three years, which is intended to support new ideas like this that would benefit passengers, potential passengers and the local community."
