This Sunday we marked the 100th year anniversary of the end of the First World War. I marked the occasion by placing my wreath at the cenotaph along the Cliffs. Each time I do I reflect on the sacrifice made by so many so that we can all live the lives we have. It really is a truly humbling experience and was wonderful to see so many people of all ages attending the ceremony on Sunday.
We must always remember the sacrifice made and I am pleased to see that in the constituency of Rochford and Southend East so much was happening to ensure that the memory of what happened survives.
In Southend, we have the new centenary fields being installed, a lasting legacy for future generations to see and remind them of the sacrifice made by so many. On Sunday there were a number of events in the town throughout the day to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. This started with the blowing of pipes in the morning and ended with the cry for peace by our town crier which was simultaneous with all criers across the United Kingdom and around the world. During the day we had the ceremonies across the town and we had the remembrance concert at the Cliffs Pavilion and we had the lighting on the beacon at the Cenotaph symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace.
It was a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom. We all choose to remember their sacrifice in different ways whether that be by attending these ceremonies or by the purchase of a red poppy. However, what is important is that we never forget!
