Southend is recognised as a Dementia-friendly community. Since it is Dementia Action Week, I would like to take the time to talk about how we can do our bit to help those with dementia.
There is always more we can do as a community and as individuals to help make life better for those living with dementia. The more we all understand the more we can help as a community.
I had the pleasure of visiting Home Instead Senior Care in Southend, based in Shoebury, last month. They do great work providing personal, at-home care in order to support patients to live independently and with dignity for as long as possible.
On Friday, they will be hosting one of their information workshops which will be beneficial for those who know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, informing on causes, symptoms and diagnosis.
If you would like to find out more about dementia or see if there is a way that you can help, you can attend workshops such as those hosted by Home Instead, there are also programs such as the Dementia Friends scheme with the Alzheimer’s Society.
Those with dementia often experience loss of communication with friends and family, which adds to their suffering.
There is a fear that comes with approaching someone suffering with dementia.
The best thing we can do is listen to those who have dementia.
This fear of the unknown is something we must tackle in order for our loved ones to still feel like themselves when they can.
This week, maybe take the time to learn more about dementia.
If you are worried that your loved one is showing symptoms of dementia, make an appointment with your GP. You can also contact the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122
