Local Member of Parliament James Duddridge visits The Southend
Remembrance Installation at Southend Cliff Gardens funded by the Heritage
Lottery Fund.
Today Local MP James Duddridge alongside the Mayor Cllr Faye Evans visited the
Southend Remembrance installation at Southend Cliff Gardens funded by the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
Southend Schools Festival (SSFR) is an inclusive National Lottery funded project
which saw over 5000 children from 25 local schools see into the lives and memories
of those who lived and fought during World War One.
Project Artist, Mary Lister worked with many of the children making their individual
poppies and oversaw the putting together of the lake and waterfall installations that
now decorates Southend seafront
Mary had this to say about SSFR:
“It has been a pleasure working with all individuals on this project, young and old.
Everyone who has taken part has not only produced a stunning artwork but also
shared a story about how they have lost someone dear to them due to war. It is
inspiring to see so many people come together to create something meaningful and
beautiful.”
James said
“This is a great project which has really encouraged Southend students to engage
with history, learning about World War One and understanding the importance of
Remembrance. By combining art, history and involving local memories allows the
students to have a connection to what they are learning about. All Southend schools
were invited to take part and I would encourage schools who did not take the
opportunity this year to consider future involvement in the project.”
