As you might be aware Barclays bank in Rochford will be closing its doors to the public on the 27th October 2017. Like most of my constituents, I was disappointed to hear of the closure and felt it important to seek reassurance from Barclays that the needs of both staff and customers were going to be prioritised throughout this transition.
Earlier today (Friday the 4th August) alongside District and Parish Councillors, I met with Irene East, Barclays Head of Corporate Relations (Eastern) andJon Clowes Community Banking Director for Essex to do just that.
One of my main concerns with the closure of the branch was the impact this would have on the more vulnerable customers. I was reassured that the local Post Office located at Martin McColls, 14 West Street, Rochford would be able to offer 99% of the same in house services that the Rochford branch are currently offering. Where there are gaps the Rochford Managers and team will provide training. Whilst I appreciate that the Post office in the square isn’t closet for everyone, the representatives from Barclays have said that they would be happy to look at ways they can work with surrounding posts offices were possible.
I was also advised that a lot of work has been done and will continually be done throughout the transition with their most vulnerable customers to ensure that they know what services are available to them. Most importantly, they will be working to educate customers on digital banking in their ‘Tea and Tech’sessions which will be held respectively on the 8th and 16th August at the Rochford branch, September dates will be released as soon as they are available and sessions will be held in the Southend High Street branch.
My other concern with the closure was the use of the building. As the building has a leasehold the responsibility lies with the Landlord but I was pleased to hear that Barclay’s Real Estate team is willing to work alongside the Landlords and Councillors to ensure the building is utilised for the local community.
