NHS 111 in south Essex went live on Tuesday, 19th March 2013 and is available 24 hours a day; 7 days a week. All calls are free, including from mobiles.
NHS 111 will make it easier to access local health services when you need help quickly. In future if you need to contact the NHS for urgent care there will only be three numbers that you need to know;
· 999 for life-threatening emergencies;
· Your GP surgery;
· 111.
NHS 111 will provide a clinical assessment at the first point of contact, without the need to call patients back; will direct people to the right NHS service, first time, without the need for them to be re-triaged; and will be able to transfer clinical assessment data to other providers and book appointments for patients where appropriate.
NHS 111 will also work alongside the 999 emergency service and will be able to despatch an ambulance without delay and without the need for a patient to repeat any information.
In south Essex, the 111 service also provides access to out of hours GP services except for South Essex Emergency Doctor Service practices and Dr Gill’s practice, who will continue to provide their own out of hours service. Access to dental out of hours for all dental practices is via the NHS 111 service.
