James Duddridge, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, submitted a written question to the Secretary of State for Transport asking what assessment there had been in relation to the economic effect of Southend Airport.
The Minister replied with the following
“…We fully recognise the contributions that airports such as Southend can make to local and regional economies, their important role in maintaining the UK’s air connectivity, and their potential for helping accommodate forecast growth in demand for aviation in the UK. In this regard, it is encouraging to note the recent development at Southend Airport, including the new railway station and terminal, and the successful launch of more commercial flights to an increased number of European destinations last year. Furthermore, the airport is extending its terminal to allow it to handle more passengers from 2014. These developments will benefit not only the airport but the area around Southend as well as the wider region.
James said
“I have always been an unequivocal supporter of the airport. The expansion continues to be of huge benefit to the residents of Southend and of course the surrounding areas. Investment from Stobart Group has paid dividends and with an ever increasing number of destinations served, the airport is going from strength to strength. To have this recognised by Departmental Ministers is a huge testament to all those involved.”
