Finally, we have had the pleasure of welcoming the sun in Southend and we can start looking forward to what will hopefully be an enjoyable summer for all.
I am sure many students cannot wait for their summer holidays, especially those taking their GCSE and A levels over the next few weeks. I want to encourage you all to work hard in preparation for your exams.
After the local elections, there is usually a peaked interest in local governance. I’d like to congratulate the newly elected councillors and the new Worshipful Mayor and Mayoress for Southend, Derek and Val Jarvis.
During this interest in local governance I would like to persuade those with the interest, time and skills to consider becoming a school governor.
Members of the community, parents and teachers should consider becoming school governors to help students have the best educational experience possible.
As a governor you would attend meetings, hold the school to account and have a say in how the school is run. The main responsibilities are to set goals and to set targets and propose policy in order to achieve those goals. The governors monitor and evaluate the school.
To be eligible for a school governor volunteer role, you must be at least 18 years old and have a strong interest in the school’s success, maybe due to you being a parent of a pupil, a teacher or a member of the community.
Schools are the centre of young people’s lives and they shape our future community. It is vital for our schools to be supported by the community to benefit from our good schools.
