Update: Help announced for the self-employed
Thank you to all the constituents who have contacted me about support for self-employed workers.
I fully appreciate that this is a very unsettling and anxious time for many self-employed people, and I have been feeding this back to fellow Ministers at the Treasury and Cabinet Office.
Yesterday, the Chancellor announced self-employed people affected by coronavirus can claim a taxable grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the last three years, up to £2,500 per month.
More details about the scheme and eligibility can be found here.
Southend Coronavirus Action
Southend Coronavirus Action has been set up to help vulnerable people in our town during this difficult period.
The team are on hand to answer questions or get the support people need, such as a few essentials from the shop or just a bit of company over the phone.
Those who do not have friends or family locally for support can call the helpline on 01702 212497. Lines are open Monday to Friday 9 – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 – 2pm.
#ClapForOurCarers
It was superb to see and hear so many people making noise for our NHS workers at 8pm last night.
Famous landmarks around our country were lit up blue in a mark of appreciation for their efforts during this coronavirus pandemic, including our very own Southend seafront.

NHS Volunteer Responders
Hundreds of thousands of people have already answered the call to support the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The role involves picking up essential supplies for the vulnerable, transporting patients, and just being a friendly voice at the end of the phone.

Finally, constituents can continue to contact my office in the usual ways should you need my help throughout this difficult period.
I'd like to remind readers that the government's instruction is to stay at home - and you should only be leaving your home for a very limited number of reasons.
I advise residents to stay up-to-date with the latest government advice and support, which is being regularly updated, at gov.uk/coronavirus.
You can also use the free GOV.UK Coronavirus Information Service on WhatsApp.
Simply add 07860 064422 in your phone contacts and then message the word ‘hi’ in a WhatsApp message to get started.
Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.
