James Duddridge, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East addresses the country’s migration issues and highlights the Government’s plans.
The Government’s objective to bring down levels of net migration back to the sustainable rates we saw in the 1980s and 1990s is under way. Under the previous Government net migration levels increased, however, as seen in the first quarter of this year the current Government has stabilised migration figures and continues to clamp down on migration.
As well as the government considering extending the length of time before settlement and access of benefits can be granted for migrants, the government are looking to introduce measures that reduce the number of sham marriages which result in increased migration levels.
James said:
“Under the previous government, migration broke all records. This government, however, has promised to tackle migration levels and will continue to address the issue as a matter of urgency.
“The previous government spent a fortune on an asylum system that failed to deliver. This government has instead established the Border Police Command as part of the new National Crime Agency. Together, with the United Kingdom Border Agency, the Government has already removed over 25,000 migrants that should not be in this country. With further measures related to the student visa system expected to come into place next year, we estimate that the net migration level will be cut by an additional 60,000. Also introduced is a permanent cap on non-European Union migrants seeking work. I fully support the government’s proposals that will clamp down on migration.”
