Local MP for Rochford and Southend East James Duddridge Continues to Lobby Parliament to be Prepared for Every Eventuality and Not To Rule Out a ‘No Deal’ Scenario.
James attended the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday (23 rd October) in the House of Commons on her negotiations over the weekend and asked the Prime Minister whether a ‘no deal scenario’ might be more beneficial to the UK than to other European countries.
James asked:
“Although we all hope that our European partners will start to negotiate on trade, is there not a silver lining if they are unreasonable? If that happens, we will have to move towards WTO rules, and suddenly the French and Germans will realise what a disaster that would be—for their economies, not ours. They will negotiate a good deal, and we will not write out the blank cheque that Labour Members want to give them.”
The Prime Minister Said:
“My hon. Friend is right. I think it is in the interests of both sides—businesses here in the UK, and businesses in the EU27 countries—that we get that deal on trade. That is why we are working so hard for it.”

James firmly believes that the government should not accept ‘any deal’ put forward by the EU and that the Labour Party’s policy of refusing to countenance this scenario would be bad for the future of the UK. He has recently written to Jeremy Corbyn explaining why this policy would damage the UK’s negotiating position.
