Last Saturday James Duddridge, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, delivered a cake to the 65 volunteers of the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch beach clean event.
The cake, which was donated by Deliveroo in celebration for Southend picking up the most litter from the beaches during their recent beach cleaning campaign, was in the shape of a sand castle.
James said,
“It is great that the Southend Community has collected more litter from our beaches than any other seaside community.”
“This clearly shows our dedication to protecting our oceans by keeping our beaches clean.”
The Marine Conservation Society’s beachwatch event, which aimed to collect and record the litter on Southend’s Jubilee beach, was able to collect 16.11kg worth of litter off the 100 metre stretch of beach that it covered. This included 361 pieces of plastic, 299 pieces of glass and 285 cigarette butts.
James said,
“It is great to learn about how much litter the beachwater volunteers were able to collect. Each piece of litter they picked up and recorded will now be safely disposed or recycled, stopping them from reaching our oceans and harming the wildlife.”
