James Duddridge, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, visited the Thames to Tama exhibition in Great Wakering.
The Thames to Tama project was devised by Lee artist Lee Baker, produced by Metal and funded by Dare to Dream. 25 Southend schools and 4664 pupils have participated in the project.
The title refers to the two rivers, The Thames and the River Tama and the project looks at the adventures of the C16th explorer, Will Adam, who became the first Briton to set foot in Japan.
The project, although arts-based, has many cross curriculum links including geography, literature, history as well as art and design. The exhibition is a stunning visual installation which is made up with the contribution of an A4 tile from each of the students that took part.
James said
“Each individual tile is a work of art, putting them together and you achieve something fantastic. The ability to have an audio tour of the exhibition also enhanced the experience.”
“To see so many schools participating in such a project and the hard work that Lee and many others have put in is truly fantastic.”
