James Duddridge, Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, recently visited the Avro Viking Centre. James received a tour of the facilities by Carol Cranfield, Group Manager of Social Care for Adult and Community Services, and accompanying staff.
The Avro Viking Centre offers personal full day care services for both mentally and physically disabled adults, ranging from mild to severe care needs. The Centre works to maximise the individual’s independent opportunities offering therapy services focusing on sensory stimulation, relaxation, hydrotherapy, and intensive interaction.
The Avro Viking Centre also started the Ordinary Lives Project to raise consciousness of disabilities, challenge common misperceptions, and promote an accepting environment in the community. The project included a photographic exhibition of the role of disabled people leading “ordinary lives” in their communities. Schools also participated in the awareness programme and pupils competed to produce a promotional tool challenging the perceived role of people with disabilities in society. James said
“The services offered to the service users were so diverse. During my visit there was a disco, a relaxation session with aromatherapy treatments, a musician and board games.”
“The staff are clearly very dedicated and passionate about the jobs they do and ensure that every client achieves their potential and enjoys themselves at the centre”
